After his death, Nickelodeon reaired all of the episodes in which Mermaid Man appeared, in memoriam. Borgnine also appeared as himself in The Simpsons episode " Boy-Scoutz 'n the Hood ", in addition to a number of television commercials.

Posthumous recordings of Ernest Borgnine's voice that he provided as Mermaid Man are used in the episodes "Super Evil Aquatic Villain Team Up is Go!" and "Patrick-Man!" which both premiered after his death. The film The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water is dedicated in Borgnine's memory, as he passed away during pre-production. Video []
Mermaid Man appears to suffer from memory loss and yells a prolonged "evil!" whenever he hears the word, while Barnacle Boy seems to be the more sensible and more irritable of the two. They are among the few humans who can breathe underwater and speak to the inhabitants of Bikini Bottom.

Mermaid Man is a semi-retired superhero. His name is a portmanteau of mermaid and the lesser-known merman, the latter being the actual name for the male version of a mermaid. He was voiced by Ernest Borgnine until Borgnine passed away on July 8, 2012.
