A quill is a writing tool made from a moulted flight feather (preferably a primary wing-feather) of a large bird. Quills were used for writing with ink before the invention of the dip pen /metal- nibbed pen, the fountain pen , and, eventually, the ballpoint pen .
With quills, it was easy to write on parchment and vellum. They were also used with fine brushes to illustrate manuscripts with figures, decorations, and images. They became increasingly popular from the 15th century on when writing flourished and writing started to spread through the Western world.
