Hace 3 días · History. The area was inhabited by Costanoan Indians when it was explored by the Spanish in the late 18th century. In 1820 a Spanish land grant known as Rancho San Antonio was established there. Logging began in the area in the 1840s, and, during the California Gold Rush (1849), it became a transit centre for goods and people.

In the 1850s, what became the first campus of the University of California was founded in Oakland, and Oakland was selected as the western terminal of the Transcontinental Railroad in 1869. The following year, Oakland's Lake Merritt became the United States' first officially designated wildlife refuge, now a National Historic Landmark .

History of Oakland, California. The area of the city of Oakland was originally inhabited by the Costanoan Indians, owing to the abundant supply of water in the area. In the early 1770s, the Spanish decided to explore what is now California, making them the first white men to visit the area.
