James Bullough Lansing (born James Martini, January 2, 1902 – September 29, 1949) was a pioneering American audio engineer and loudspeaker designer who was most notable for establishing two audio companies that bear his name, Altec Lansing and JBL, the latter taken from his initials, JBL. JBL was founded by James Bullough Lansing (1902–1949), an American audio engineer and loudspeaker designer best known for establishing JBL, taken from his initials. He earlier had founded Lansing, which was purchased by Altec to form Altec Lansing.
8 de sept. de 2023 · The company was founded by James Bullough Lansing in 1946, hence the JBL name. Although JBL was conceived in the ’40s, Lansing’s expertise dates back to 1927 with the formation of the Lansing Manufacturing Company. Partnering with Ken Decker, Lansing’s first business built loudspeakers and drivers for cinemas and movie theatres.
In 1981, John Eargle, then JBL Vice President of Market Planning, developed a biography of James B. Lansing and a corporate history of JBL. It was based on historical documents, and most importantly, interviews with Lansing's key associates and family members. It remains the definitive documentation of the subject of Lansing heritage.
