Synopsis. Doc returns to a failed Western Biological Laboratories and a changed Cannery Row after serving in the army during World War II. Mack and the Boys are still living in the Palace Flophouse, but Lee Chong has sold his general store to Joseph and Mary Rivas.
Cannery Row is a 1982 American comedy-drama film directed by David S. Ward in his directorial debut, starring Nick Nolte and Debra Winger. The movie is adapted from John Steinbeck's novels Cannery Row (1945) and Sweet Thursday (1954).

Emmett Walsh and Frank McRae and the soundtrack including Doctor John's piano stylings, make this a film of metaphor and wonderful enchantment.
In the late 1970s, producer Michael Phillips had the idea of making a film that combined elements of Cannery Row with another Steinbeck work, the 1954 novel Sweet Thursday . It took Phillips nearly three years to secure the rights because Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II owned the stage and screen rights to Sweet Thursday .
The movie is mostly based on Sweet Thursday, the sequel to Cannery Row. Stage [ edit ] In 1994, the Western Stage in Salinas, California , commissioned J.R. Hall to do a stage adaptation of the novel to commemorate the 50th anniversary of its publication.

Writers were always dredging the essential humanity out of the proletariat in the thirties and forties, and John Steinbeck, who wrote 'Cannery Row' and 'Sweet Thursday', the novels that inspired this movie, was no exception.
