James Houston Davis (September 11, 1899 – November 5, 2000) was an American singer, songwriter, and politician. After achieving fame for releasing both sacred and popular songs, Davis served as governor of Louisiana from 1944 to 1948 and again from 1960 to 1964.

Opened in the fall of 1996, Jimmie Davis State Park was originally named Caney Creek Lake State Park. The 2003 Louisiana State Legislature approved renaming the park in honor of two-term Governor Jimmie H. Davis, who served from 1944 to 1948 and again from 1960 to 1964.
Davis went on to be governor of Louisiana from 1944 to 1948 and again from 1960 to 1964, and used the song for his election campaign. [3] . In 1977, the Louisiana State Legislature decreed "You Are My Sunshine" the state song in honor of Davis. [6] . Its best-known covers include a recording by Johnny Cash in 1989. [7] .
Named after one of Louisiana’s most beloved governors (and, fun fact: the man who wrote state song “You Are My Sunshine”), Jimmie Davis State Park is a charming waterfront refuge on the shores of Caney Creek Reservoir. It’s popular with families, fishermen, cyclists and campers.
