Eric Fletcher Waters was a conscientious objector who later joined the British Army as a second lieutenant in the Royal Fusiliers. He was killed in action at Anzio in 1944 and his son Roger, the founder of Pink Floyd, wrote songs inspired by his death.

"When the Tigers Broke Free" is a Pink Floyd song by Roger Waters. It describes the death of his father, Eric Fletcher Waters, on 18 February 1944, during the Battle of Anzio during the Italian Campaign of the Second World War.
Waters was born on 6 September 1943, the younger of two boys, to Mary (née Whyte; 1913–2009) and Eric Fletcher Waters (1914–1944), in Great Bookham, Surrey. His father, the son of a coal miner and Labour Party activist, was a schoolteacher, a devout Christian, and a Communist Party member.
