He also played in a local band called "Hard Rain", a Bob Dylan inspired band he formed at the Royal Academy of Music. Hard Rain recorded a few songs on a reel of tape, that he never saw again after lending it to a member of the Kinks. Gosling could also play the bass and guitar.
He was replaced by Bob Henrit, who completed work on the album. Gibbons left in 1989, with Mark Haley taking his place beginning with the tour in support of UK Jive. Haley remained a touring member, with the 1993 album Phobia recorded as a four-piece.
