Stratovarius (a portmanteau of Stratocaster and Stradivarius) was founded by Tuomo Lassila, John Vihervä, and Staffan Stråhlman originally under the name Black Water. The name "Stratovarius" was invented by Lassila. The music of early Stratovarius was very different from what it is today.
Stratovarius is described as primarily a power metal band and one of the most influential groups of the genre, and also encompassed other genres, such as neoclassical metal, progressive metal and symphonic metal.
First used on their first album, Fright Night (1989). First used on their sixth album, Visions (1997). Used since their twelfth album, Polaris (2009).
