St. Augustine grass (Stenotaphrum secundatum), also known as buffalo turf in Australia and buffalo grass in South Africa, is a species of grass in the family Poaceae. It is a warm-season lawn grass that is popular for cultivation in tropical and subtropical regions.

It can invade roadsides, gardens and lawns, grassland, river banks, swamps, coastal areas and disturbed sites, and is considered an environmental weed in Australia and New Zealand ( Sauer, 1972; Howell, 2008 ).

St. Augustine grass ( Stenotaphrum secundatum ), also called buffalo grass, is cultivated as a coarse lawn grass in some areas of Australia and North America; the plant is native to the American South and to Central America but has become naturalized along many seacoasts of the world.
Stenotaphrum secundatum is an evergreen Perennial growing to 0.2 m (0ft 8in) by 0.1 m (0ft 4in) at a slow rate. See above for USDA hardiness. It is hardy to UK zone 8. Suitable for: light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils. Suitable pH: mildly acid, neutral and basic (mildly alkaline) soils and can grow in very alkaline soils.
Its dense, tight structure makes it resistant to weed infestation. It's known to improve soil structure, enhance water infiltration rates and also increases the soils' water retention capacity. It can also be used as a ground cover under trees to promote soil conservation.
