St. Lorenzo Ruiz (Chinese-Filipino) - Asian Catholic Initiative. Saint Lorenzo Ruiz is the first Filipino venerated in the Roman Catholic Church. Of Chinese-Filipino parentage, he became the country’s protomartyr after his execution by the Tokugawa Shogunate during its persecution of Japanese Christians in the 17th century.

Biografía. Ruiz nació en Binondo, Manila ( Filipinas ). Su padre, de origen chino le enseñó el idioma chino, y su madre filipina le enseñó tagalo 6 . Ambos eran católicos. Lorenzo sirvió en el convento de la iglesia de Binondo como sacristán. Años más tarde, se hizo miembro de la Confraternidad del Santo Rosario.
