St. Lorenzo Ruiz (Chinese-Filipino) - Asian Catholic Initiative. Saint Lorenzo Ruiz is the first Filipino venerated in the Roman Catholic Church. Of Chinese-Filipino parentage, he became the country’s protomartyr after his execution by the Tokugawa Shogunate during its persecution of Japanese Christians in the 17th century.

By dying a little bit each day, and by giving up his own selfishness so that he might be a devoted husband and father, he prepared his heart to accept God’s second vocation for him, that of a martyr.

Both were Christians and took care to raise Lorenzo as a Catholic. He served happily in his parish church as an altar boy and calligrapher.
