The Thermal Baths in Vals are the masterpiece of Peter Zumthor and also a place of enlightenment, especially because the shadow is venerated. Only two years after its completion the Therme Vals were listed as a protected building.

In the alpine village of Vals, Peter Zumthor designed a modernist construction known as Therme Vals Spa; opened to the public in 1996. The architect was principally inspired by “The Subject of Phenomenology” by Martin Heidegger, whose theory establishes experiences captured through the five senses.
During the early 1980s the community of Vals bought a bankrupt hotel consisting of three buildings from the 1960s, and commissioned Peter Zumthor to build a new thermal bath.

From the earlier projects in Chur, and from the church of Sogn Benedetg west of Vals (AR January 1991), Zumthor has now developed an architecture of complex spatial interpenetration.
