The function of the three major nerves and their branches in the thigh is to provide both somatosensory information to the cortex and to innervate the muscles of the thigh. The thigh can be broken down into three different compartments: anterior, posterior, and medial.
The femoral nerve can be damaged during penetrating trauma to the thigh. It can also be damaged during hip replacement , abdominal, and pelvic surgeries. There are several mechanisms for nerve damaged as a result from in direct trauma.

The femoral nerve is the major nerve supplying the anterior compartment of the thigh. It is the largest branch of the lumbar plexus, and arises from the dorsal divisions of the ventral rami of the second, third, and fourth lumbar nerves (L2, L3, and L4).
