Rather than seize and fortify the islands and wait for the inevitable US counterattack, Japan's military leaders instead decided on the preventive attack on Pearl Harbor, which they assumed would negate the American forces needed for the liberation and the reconquest of the islands.
On December 7, 1941, Japan staged a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, decimating the US Pacific Fleet. When Germany and Italy declared war on the United States days later, America found itself in a global war.
At 7:55 AM the coordinated attack on Pearl Harbor begins. At 8:10 AM the battleship USS Arizona explodes. At 8:17 AM the destroyer USS Helm fires on and sinks a Japanese submarine at the entrance to the harbor.
