Mining - Dredging, Extraction, Reclamation: Dredging is the underwater excavation of a placer deposit by floating equipment. Dredging systems are classified as mechanical or hydraulic, depending on the method of material transport.
A dredge is defined by the way in which it recovers the ore from the bottom. The four types are bucket-wheel, ladder, clamshell, and suction. The choice will depend on the depth of the deposit below the surface of the water and the degree of consolidation of the deposit.

25 de may. de 2011 · Dredging is the term given to removal by digging, gathering, or pulling out materials from the bed to deepen waterways and to create harbors, channels, and berths. Dredging is also conducted for construction purposes, for mining, and for environmental cleanup and enhancement.
Dredging is excavation carried out underwater or partially underwater, in shallow waters or ocean waters. It keeps waterways and ports navigable, and assists coastal protection, land reclamation and coastal redevelopment, by gathering up bottom sediments and transporting it elsewhere.
Gold dredges are an important tool of gold miners around the world. They allow profitable mining at relatively low operational costs. Even though the concept is simple in principle, dredges can be engineered in different ways allowing to catch different sizes of gold specimen.
Without proper control, mining and dredging activities may also cause air and soil pollution along with solid waste issues. These are discussed in this chapter.
