The San peoples (also Saan), or Bushmen, are the members of any of the indigenous hunter-gatherer cultures of southern Africa, and the oldest surviving cultures of the region. Their recent ancestral territories span Botswana, Namibia, Angola, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, and South Africa.

The majority of San people alive today live in abject poverty and experience low standards of living. Indeed, they have become Southern Africa’s poorest people. Around 100 000 San Bushmen are alive currently, most of whom are strangers to the traditional hunter-gatherer lifestyle.
The Bushmen (also known as Khwe, Basarwa, or San) peoples of South Africa and neighboring Botswana and Namibia, who live in the Kalahari Desert, are part of the Khoisan group and are related to the Khoikhoi. They have a remarkably complex language characterized by the use of click sounds.
