In August 2016, American ambassador to Moldova, James Pettit, declared that Moldova is not Romania and that the Moldovan people have their own history and identity. He also added that Moldova should join the European Union as an independent state.
I would venture some reasons: By unification of Moldova with Romania, Moldova would join the EU, which would not be looked upon favorably by either Russia or the EU. Of course, there is also the issue of Transnistria (see the War of Transnistria), which is probably the bigger issue here.
The history of Moldova’s loose connection to the Romanian nation and the effects of Russian and Soviet rule on Moldovans’ cultural identity have created a situation wherein many Moldovans do not consider themselves Romanians.

Moreover, many Moldovans likely do not want their country to unify with Romania due to cultural and language barriers.
The king abdicated. When the Axis prepared their "operation Barbarossa" to invade USSR, Romania joined the Axis to regain at least part of its lost territoriy, Basserabia. It did, and even went into the region beyond it and then all the way to Stalingrad.
6 de ene. de 2022 · While support for unification is at around 44% in Moldova, a 2018 poll by the Romanian Bureau of Social Research showed that as many as 74% of Romanians would vote in favor of unification in a hypothetical referendum over this issue. On the other hand, 15% would vote against it, while 11% would not vote at all.
On 2 March 2023, the Moldovan parliament passed a law affirming that the state language was Romanian and not "Moldovan", clearing up previous ambiguities. The idea was supported by the ruling Party of Action and Solidarity and was strongly opposed by the Bloc of Communists and Socialists .
