In a counterculture reaction to the fierce athletic competition at most U.S. universities, UC Santa Cruz students chose the Banana Slug as their teams’ unofficial mascot in the early years.
Most students disliked the new mascot and offered an alternative mascot, the banana slug. In 1986, students voted via referendum to declare the banana slug the official mascot of UCSC – a vote the chancellor refused to honor, arguing that only athletes should choose the mascot.

The students' adoption of such a lowly creature for a team mascot was their counterculture reaction to the fierce athletic competition fostered at most American universities.
The banana slug (specifically Ariolimax dolichophallus, which is the most common banana slug on campus) is the mascot of the University of California, Santa Cruz. It is common in local forests, was approved by a student vote, [citation needed] and was named the best college mascot by Reader's Digest in 2004.
At the same time of the confidential laboratory mishap, UC Santa Cruz students were leading a grassroots campaign to make the Banana Slug the official mascot for campus. The students and researchers together found Sammy Slug and offered them the role as the official UC Santa Cruz mascot.
