The Thirty Years' War, which raged from 1618 until 1648, embroiled most of Europe in a conflict that dramatically changed not only the map but also the balance of European power.
The Thirty Years' War (1618–1648) began as a religious war between Protestants and Catholics in Central Europe. Gradually, however, the Ottoman Empire and France joined the Protestants in order to undermine the power of the Catholic Habsburg Empire. Ultimately, most of Europe became involved.
