This is Jeff Benjamin’s piece on Steve Scott, the former AR holder in the mile at 3:47.69, the 1983 WC Helsinki Silver medalist at the 1,500m, and a man who ran just over 110 sub-four-minute miles.
The following year Scott broke the American mile record twice, both times again at Oslo. First, he won a race on June 26, 1982 in 3:48.53, becoming history's third-fastest miler behind Coe and Steve Ovett ; then 11 days later he ran 3:47.69, the second-fastest mile in history.
Steve Scott was one of the USA's most consistent middle-distance runners ever, recording an astounding 137 sub-4 minute Miles (includes official Mile split from 2000 meter race in 1982), the most by any athlete in history.

He set three U.S. records, running the outdoor mile in 3:47.69 in 1982; and the still-standing records in the indoor mile in 3:51.8 in 1981 and the indoor 2000 meters in 4:58.6, also in 1981. Scott has been at the helm of the Cal State San Marcos cross country and track & field programs since 1999.
