Steeleye Span began in late 1969, when London-born bass player Ashley Hutchings left Fairport Convention, the band he had co-founded in 1967. Fairport had been involved in a road accident in 1969 in which the drummer, Martin Lamble, and guitarist Richard Thompson 's girlfriend, Jeannie Franklyn, were killed and other band members injured.

The 7 piece line-up from 2017-2019, was the first in the bands history. It started in 2017 with the additions of Benji Kirkpatrick and Roger Carey. Roger was a straight replacement for Rick Kemp, the 'Classic Line-up' Bass player. Benji was an additional member, mainly to add back in the Rhythmic Guitar role that Pete Zorn filled.
