In English pronunciation, the difference between short and long vowels is primarily in the duration—the length of time the vowel sound is held—and the position of the mouth and tongue when producing the sound. Short vowels are typically quicker and are made with the mouth and tongue in a more relaxed position.
The most common sound for each vowel is its “short” sound: ă, pronounced /æ/ as in a pple, pan, or mat, ĕ, pronounced /ɛ/ as in el ephant, pen, or met, ĭ, pronounced /ɪ/ as in in sect, pin, or mitt, ŏ, pronounced /ɑ/ as in o ctopus, o strich, up o n, or m o tto, and ŭ, pronounced /ʌ/ as in u mbrella, pun, or mutt.
