Trotsky Ice Axe. On August 20, 1940, exiled Russian revolutionary Leon Trotsky welcomed a man he thought was a friend Ramón Mercader into his private study. Moments later, Trotsky lay bleeding on the floor, victim of a grisly blow from an axe to the head that ended his life the next day.
Mercader struck Trotsky from behind and mortally wounded him on the head with an ice axe while he was looking at the document. The blow failed to kill Trotsky, and he got up and grappled with Mercader. Hearing the commotion, Trotsky's guards burst into the room and beat Mercader nearly to death.
