I thought it was great because it's a subtle, sci-fi comment on the South African Apartheid. Look up District Six on Wikipedia, and remember that District 9 is set in South Africa. The forced relocation that the movie portrayed happened in real life when the South African government tried to relocate a mostly black neighborhood.

Judging by his output in the 13 years since District 9, Blomkamp was a one hit wonder. Rather leave this sci-fi classic alone instead of adding on to it with a desperate cashgrab after the rest of his career went nowhere. If there was an actual good story to tell here I can't imagine it wouldn't have happened by now.
