Born in the Gorbals, Glasgow, Scotland, Shulman began his recording career as the singer of British pop band Simon Dupree and the Big Sound, with Pete O'Flaherty, Eric Hine, Tony Ransley, and his brothers Phil Shulman and Ray Shulman.
The core of what was to become Gentle Giant comprised three brothers: Phil Shulman (born 1937), Derek Shulman (born 1947) and Ray Shulman (1949–2023). Ray Shulman, a founding member, with two of his brothers, in the progressive rock band Gentle Giant, died March 30, 2023, at 73. His death was announced by his bandmate and brother, Derek Shulman, today (April 1). Ray Shulman had been battling a long illness, though the specific cause of death wasn’t disclosed.
After many years of learning how to play the violin and guitar, he was primed for the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain as a violinist, but his brother Derek convinced him to join his band Simon Dupree and the Big Sound, with their eldest brother Phil. They scored a hit in 1967 with Kites.
