Killebrew disclosed his esophageal cancer in late 2010 and died five months later at age 74. Following Killebrew's death, the event was renamed the "Killebrew-Thompson Memorial Golf Tournament" (KTM), with events in Idaho and Minnesota. See also. Biography portal; Baseball portal
The tournament was founded by Hall of Famer Harmon Killebrew and Congressman Ralph Harding in memory of the Minnesota Twins shortstop, Danny Thompson who died of leukemia at the young age of 29. Through their hard work and the dedication of their supporters, the KTM is now considered one of the leading cancer research fundraisers of its kind.
St. Jude has helped push the overall survival rate for childhood cancer from 20% when we first opened our doors to 80% today. We won’t stop until no child dies from cancer. Danny started raising money for his vision of St. Jude in the early 1950s.

During the 1975 season he led American League shortstops in batting average and played well enough that he had hopes of making the All-Star team. Danny died in December 1976, leaving a wife, two daughters, a commendable major league playing record, and a former teammate who didn’t want Danny Thompson’s life, and death, to go unnoticed.
14 de dic. de 2015 · When Thompson died, Killebrew, the famed slugger who finished with 573 home runs and played with Thompson through 1974, wrote a $6,000 check for cancer research. But he wanted to do more. Killebrew teamed with former Idaho congressman Ralph Harding and founded the Danny Thompson Memorial Golf Tournament in Sun Valley, Idaho.
