19 de oct. de 2023 · Donating human blood to chimpanzees has been far less studied, and is not believed to be a viable procedure. If humans are looking for a viable source for blood when our supply is running low, we may want to shift away from our chimpanzee cousins and instead look to the pig sty!
In 2014, a retrospective survey of U.S. zoos housing great apes received 45 of 67 responses; from which, 12 transfusion cases in great apes were identified, including Sumatran orangutans ( Pongo pygmaeus sumatraensis, n = 4), chimpanzee ( Pan troglodytes , n = 1), and western lowland gorillas ( Gorilla gorilla gorilla, n = 7).

Xenotransfusion uses non-human animals to aid in the shortage of blood for blood transfusion in humans. Some scientists preliminarily favor Sus scrofa domesticus (pigs) as a source of blood after having tested many different animals in order to find the best candidate for a blood donation.
The first heart transplant in a human ever performed was by Hardy in 1964, using a chimpanzee heart, but the patient died within 2 hours. Starzl carried out the first chimpanzee-to-human liver transplantation in 1966; in 1992, he obtained patient survival for 70 days following a baboon liver transplant.
