Aquinas: Metaphysics. Metaphysics is taken by Thomas Aquinas to be the study of being qua being, that is, a study of the most fundamental aspects of being that constitute a being and without which it could not be. Aquinas’s metaphysical thought follows a modified but general Aristotelian view.

The Subject-Matter of Metaphysics and the Posterior Analytics Model Aquinas is famous for his view that the subject of metaphysics, i.e., the proper object of a metaphysical investigation, is being as being (ens qua ens) or being in general (ens commune), not God and separate substances.
Summary. For Aquinas metaphysics, first philosophy, and a philosophical science of the divine (scientia divina) are one and the same. Following Aristotle, he is convinced that there is a science that studies being as being. Like other theoretical sciences, metaphysics must have a given subject.
