Implications for practice and research. The study highlights the urgent need for improved surveillance, prevention and control of bacterial antimicrobial resistance worldwide. Research should be conducted to develop rapid and accurate diagnostic tests to detect resistant infections.

Estimating the global burden of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is laden with challenges, but undertaking this enormous task is crucial for steadfast decisions on resource allocation from a national, regional, and global perspective, as well as for research prioritisation and intervention evaluation.
