1 de ago. de 2022 · What’s Listening for Gist? Gist is defined as the most important pieces of information about something, or general information without details. In the context of language learning and teaching, Gist is defined as the general meaning or purpose of a text, either written or spoken .
We often call this listening for gist. For example, the words 'food', 'friends', 'fun', 'park' and 'sunny day' have their own meanings, but when you hear the words in sequence, they help form the context of a picnic. Practise listening for gist: Find a short video with subtitles on a topic that interests you.
Listening for gist distinguishes itself from other types of listening through its broad goal. It does not have an interactional purpose because, when listening for gist, one is outside of the text and not expected to interact with it (Mendelsohn, 1994).

Practise listening for the gist or main purpose. Reduce listening barriers. Listen for specific details such as problems. Listen for speaker bias. Make assumptions and predictions. Listen to many different accents. Listen with noise in the background. Learn to “tune out” other sounds. If you ask a question, listen for the answer.
Listening strategies like these help when the learner has difficulty understanding by working with what they were able to understand. Over time, the learner will become a more effective listener.
