Anna Tellwright lives in the Pottery District in Staffordshire with her young stepsister Agnes & father Ephraim, who is a wealthy man, but a miser. Anna attends the Methodist Church, but their strict rules & her father's thumb on everything she & Agnes do creates a longing for freedom.
Season 1 – Anna of the Five Towns. Anna Tellwright inherits her grandmother's estate at 21 and becomes a wealthy young woman.
On Anna's 21st birthday she learns of her large inheritance from her mother. Her father pushes her to start collecting rent on her property rented by the Prices's but he keeps control of all her money.
