Gidget (/ ˈ ɡ ɪ dʒ ɪ t /) is a fictional character created by author Frederick Kohner (based on his teenage daughter, Kathy) in his 1957 novel, Gidget, the Little Girl with Big Ideas. The novel follows the adventures of a teenage girl and her surfing friends on the beach in Malibu .

Frederick Kohner was born on 25 September 1905 in Teplitz-Schönau, Austria-Hungary [now Teplice, Czech Republic]. He was a writer and actor, known for Gidget (1965), Mad About Music (1938) and Hollywood Story (1951). He was married to Fritzi Klein. He died on 7 July 1986 in Los Angeles, California, USA.
