Profesor y curador emérito (en la División de Antropología desde 1968 hasta su retiro en 1994.) A partir de 2005 ocupó la cátedra de Charles J. MacCurdy Profesor de Antropología, Emérito, Universidad de Yale. Fue mundialmente famoso por sus investigaciones y publicaciones sobre los mayas, los olmecas y muchos otros temas arqueológicos.
