Samuel Montagu, 1st Baron Swaythling [1] (21 December 1832 – 12 January 1911), was a British banker who founded the bank of Samuel Montagu & Co. He was a philanthropist and Liberal politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1885 to 1900, and was later raised to the peerage.

Samuel Montagu, first Baron Swaythling, was born in Liverpool in 1832, the youngest son of Louis Samuel, whose father had come to London from Kempen, near Posen, in about 1775.
MONTAGU, Sir SAMUEL, first Baron Swaythling (1832–1911), foreign exchange-banker and Jewish philanthropist, born at Liverpool on 21 Dec. 1832, was second son and youngest child of Louis Samuel (1794–1859), watchmaker and silversmith, of Liverpool, by his wife Henrietta, daughter of Israel Israel of Bury Street, St. Mary Axe.
Samuel Montagu, first Baron Swaythling (1832-1911), JP, DL, FSA, was educated at the Liverpool Institution and privately. In 1853 he established and became head of the banking firm Samuel Montagu and Company, London. He was a member of the Gold and Silver Commission, 1887-90.
