Harry Love was the head of California’s first law enforcement agency, the California Ranger s, and became famous for allegedly killing the notorious bandit Joaquin Murrieta. Love was born in Vermont in about 1809 and left home at an early age to become a sailor.

Love was a homeless drunk, separated from his wife and insanely jealous. In June 1868, he was waiting with a shotgun when she came to her Santa Clara home with a hired hand/bodyguard.
