Menawa, first called Hothlepoya (c. 1765 – c. 1836–40), was a Muscogee (Creek) chief and military leader. He was of mixed race , with a Creek mother and a fur trader father of mostly Scots ancestry.

Born in 1765, Menawa was a polarizing political figure amongst the Creek Indians during the tribal disintegration of the early nineteenth century. Despite being of mixed origin with a Scottish father, Menawa assimilated into Native life while growing up in the Creek town of Okfuskee.

14 de sept. de 2017 · Menawa, a war chief from the Creek village of Okfuskee, led the Red Stick forces at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend, where nearly one thousand Creek warriors sought to defend themselves and their families from an American army led by Major General Andrew Jackson.
Menawa was a realistic military strategist who lost patience with the incantations being used against the U.S. by the prophet Monahell, who was first in command. In a short unpublished biography by J.Y. Brame, Menawa is reported to have killed Monahell during the battle and taken command.
