After over 20 years in Parliament, he stepped down from the House of Commons at the 2005 general election and in 2005 was created a life peer as Baron Smith of Finsbury. He is a former Chair of the London Cultural Consortium (2005-08) and was chairman of the Environment Agency (2008-14).
