John Chiang (born July 31, 1962) is an American politician who served as the 33rd Treasurer of California from 2015 to 2019. A member of the Democratic Party, he previously served as the 31st Controller of California from 2007 to 2015 and on the California State Board of Equalization from 1997 to 2007.
John Chiang is a faculty member at UC Berkeley who studies the climate system and its interactions with the tropics. He uses computer simulations and paleoclimate data to investigate climate variability and change over different time periods.
John Chiang was the 33rd State Treasurer of California from 2015 to 2019, and a former State Controller and Board of Equalization member. He is a USC Center for the Political Future Fall 2020 Fellow, and teaches a course on California's economy and state finances from the Financial Crisis to COVID-19.

From 2015-2019, John Chiang served as California’s 33rd State Treasurer. As the state’s banker, he oversaw trillions of dollars in annual transactions, managed a $75 billion investment portfolio, and was the nation’s largest issuer of municipal bonds.
