Charta 77 byla neformální československá občanská iniciativa, která kritizovala „politickou i státní moc“ za nedodržování lidských a občanských práv, k jejichž dodržování se ČSSR zavázala při podpisu Závěrečného aktu Konference o bezpečnosti a spolupráci v Evropě (KBSE) v Helsinkách. Iniciativa působila v letech 1977 až 1992.
Declaration of Charter 77. Annotation. In 1976, the Czech psychedelic rock band, the Plastic People of the Universe, were arrested and tried by the Czech Communist government. The government convicted the band for disturbing the peace, with the band members serving 8 to 18 month sentences.
