Timbuktu (/ ˌ t ɪ m b ʌ k ˈ t uː / TIM-buk-TOO; French: Tombouctou; Koyra Chiini: Tumbutu; Tuareg: ⵜⵏⵀⵗⵜ, romanized: Tin Bukt) is an ancient city in Mali, situated 20 kilometres (12 miles) north of the Niger River.
Tombuctú 2 (oficialmente, en francés: Tombouctou; en tuareg ⵜⵏⴱⵈⵜ Tin Buqt; en koyra chiini, Tumbutu ), apodada «la ciudad de los 333 santos», es una ciudad situada a siete kilómetros del río Níger, capital de la región homónima, en la República de Malí.
Tombuctú fue un centro de sabiduría islámica a lo largo de varios imperios africanos, albergó una universidad de 25.000 estudiantes y otras madrasas que sirvieron para expandir el islam por África entre los siglos XIII y XVI.
