From a 1956 novel by Ugo Pirro, it tells the story of a young lieutenant in the Italian Army who in 1942 is ordered to take a lorryload of Greek prostitutes from starving Athens under Axis occupation to entertain the troops fighting partisans in Albania.
Camp followers in the Continental Army served a critical role in the day-to-day functions of the American revolutionary cause. By the winter of 1777, around two thousand women marched with American troops and worked as seamstresses, nurses, and cooks.
Modern camp-follower children are now more often called military brats in several English-speaking countries. In the United States, Canada and Great Britain, the term refers specifically to the mobile children of career soldiers, who traditionally have been camp or base followers.
The Camp Followers is set in WWII in the aftermath of a long, brutal and ultimately futile battle waged by Mussolini on Greece. The scenario that unfolds sees a disillusioned soldier tasked with taking a truck loaded with 12 prostitutes across a mountain range to supply various military encampments along the route.
