Two 14-year-old boys try to escape their oppressive home in a working-class suburb of Hamburg, first by taking a homemade raft and later a stolen sailboat down the Elbe towards the open sea.
Rainfall is scarcely 100 mm (4 in) per year in the northern part of the Dead Sea and barely 50 mm (2 in) in the southern part. The Dead Sea zone's aridity is due to the rainshadow effect of the Judaean Mountains. The highlands east of the Dead Sea receive more rainfall than the Dead Sea itself.

The Dead Sea is 304 meters deep, making it the world’s deepest hypersaline lake, and has a shoreline of about 135 kilometers. It contains 114 cubic kilometers of water.
The northern area of the Dead Sea receives scarcely four inches (100 mm) of rain per year, with the southern section receiving barely two inches. The Dead Sea zone's aridity is due to the rainshadow effect of the Judean Hills. The highlands east of the Dead Sea receive more rainfall than the Dead Sea itself.
