Paul Verhoeven es un director, guionista y productor holandés, hijo de una sombrerera llamada Nel van Schaardenburg y del maestro de escuela Wim Verhoeven. Nació en Ámsterdan y creció en la pequeña localidad de Slikkerveer y en la ciudad de La Haya, lugar que fue ocupado por los nazis en la Segunda Guerra Mundial, cuando Paul era un niño.
