Theodore Roosevelt Sr. (September 22, 1831 – February 9, 1878) was an American businessman and philanthropist from the Roosevelt family. Roosevelt was also the father of President Theodore Roosevelt and the paternal grandfather of First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt .

Theodore Roosevelt Sr. was born on September 22, 1831 in New York City. He was the youngest of Cornelius Van Schaack Roosevelt and Margaret Barnhill's five sons. He was a seventh-generation Dutch New Yorker and participant in the Roosevelt family business of plate-glass importing, Roosevelt and Son.
Theodore Roosevelt Sr. (1831-1878) was the fifth son of Cornelius Van Schaack Roosevelt, a prosperous New York merchant, and Margaret Barnhill Roosevelt. Theodore (Thee), a partner in the family’s import business, Roosevelt and Son, inherited a considerable sum following his father’s death in 1871.
His father and mentor, Theodore Roosevelt Sr., died shortly after being diagnosed with stomach cancer. The young man was devastated by this loss but resumed his studies. His father's death changed the direction of Theodore's life.
