In my view he was a revolutionary genius, one who often sought to take local inspiration to fuel music of universal relevance and power.. Perhaps the best example of all his ‘anomalies’ is Zápisník zmizelého, more familiar to non-Czechs as The Diary of One Who Disappeared. What exactly is it?
Often regarded as being the pinnacle of Janáček’s song output, The Diary of One Who Disappeared was the first result of the first meeting between the ageing composer and his new young muse Kamila Stösslová.
The Diary of One Who Disappeared. Zápisník zmizelého, or (The) Diary of One Who Disappeared, is a half-hour Czech -language quasi-operatic song cycle for tenor, alto, three other women's voices and piano completed in 1919 by Leoš Janáček.
