The essential criteria for plateaus are low relative relief and some altitude. They are remarkably flat and can extend hundreds or even thousands of kilometres.
In geology and physical geography, a plateau (/ p l ə ˈ t oʊ, p l æ ˈ t oʊ, ˈ p l æ t oʊ /; French:; pl.: plateaus or plateaux), also called a high plain or a tableland, is an area of a highland consisting of flat terrain that is raised steeply above the surrounding area on both the side.
Plateaus are sculpted by geologic forces that lift them up and the wind and rain that wear them down into mesas, buttes, and canyons.
