The Aran Islands is a four part collection of journal entries regarding the geography and people of the Aran Islands. It was completed by John Millington Synge in 1901 and first published in 1907. It is based on Synge's multiple travels through the Irish speaking and predominately rural set of islands off the Western coast of Ireland.
Synge was better known for his plays, the better half of the Irish theatre revival, but this book is something of an hidden core to those plays: four month-long visits to the Aran Islands, relatively isolated rocky isles that became the crowning symbol of the 20th century's Irish nationalism.

I learned of this book from Tim Robinson's excellent accounts of the totality of life on these islands, in his Stones of Aran: Labyrinth and Stones of Aran: Pilgrimage.

There are three islands: Aranmor, the north island, about nine miles long; Inishmaan, the middle island, about three miles and a half across, and nearly round in form; and the south island, Inishere—in Irish, east island,—like the middle island but slightly smaller.

The Aran Islands, published in the same year, records his visits to the islands in 1898-1901, when he was gathering the folklore and anecdotes out of which he forged The Playboy and his other major dramas. Yet this book is much more than a stage in the evolution of Synge the dramatist.
