The liquid fire of Joshua Breakstone’s playing is very much in evidence on his 2015 release 2nd Avenue – The Return of the Cello-Quartet and what a glorious work or guitar-playing art it is. The music abounds in both heat and gentility.
O’s Notes: Joshua Breakstone plays guitar and is the leader of a trio with bassist Lisle Atkinson and drummer Andy Watson. Cellist Mike Richmond joins them for 5 of the 9 selections in ‘the return of the cello-quartet’.
The Lamp Is Low, an adaptation of a melody by Ravel, has smooth interplay between Breakstone and Atkinson while 2 nd Ave:Blues for Imahori is a tour de force for Breakstone who wrote the piece. It provides him with the opportunity to cut loose and , as he says, it is ' All guitar all the way'.
