In 1971, the School of Journalism merged with the Department of Television-Radio and was renamed the S. I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. A second building, Newhouse 2, was dedicated in 1974 with a keynote address by William S. Paley, chairman of the board of CBS. It cost $7.2 million to build.

S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. The roots of the Newhouse School are found in Syracuse University’s former School of Journalism, which was founded in 1934. In 1934 SU became the first university in the nation to offer a college credit radio course.
Newhouse received approximately 5,000 applications for a first-year class of 425. The typical admitted first-year student has a 3.9 GPA. On the graduate level, the school receives approximately 700 applications each year for about 180 spots in on-campus master’s programs.
